Working for a New Settlement
It is clear that people across the UK need and want change. This fact has been clearly expressed in the vote to leave the European Union, with its slogan of ‘take back control’. However, the real change we need – political, economic, social and ecological - won't happen just because we are leaving, and it certainly won't happen under the direction of Boris Johnson.
We are saddled with a failing political and economic settlement, which the British Prime Minister and the rest of his class, continue to favour, for the simple reason that they are the ones who benefit from it. Under this settlement, a vast share of the spoils of our economy goes to a very small group of people, while at the same time, formal political power has become ever more centralised. And it is a direct result of this abiding oligarchical settlement that our society has become so economically unequal, and individuals so politically powerless.
It follows from this that what is needed is a grassroots movement for a new settlement, one which actually does ‘take back control’ by putting real power - political, economic, social, ecological, even spiritual, in the hands of ordinary people.
